HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss fought off a
hard-charging Loyola (N. O.) squad, defeating the Wolfpack,
78-67, Tuesday night at Reed Green Coliseum.
Maurice Bolden recorded his first double-double of the
year, and fifth of his career, scoring 22 points and grabbing
a season-high 13 rebounds. Gary Flowers posted his second
straight double-double with 12 points and 14 boards. Flowers also scored his 1,000th career point, becoming the 35th
Golden Eagle to achieve the feat.
R.L. Horton contributed 15 points. Josimar Ayarza and
Angelo Johnson had nine points apiece, and LaShay Page
added eight points.
The Golden Eagles ( 21-6) started off leading 11-4 over
the first 3: 29. However, Loyola (N.O.) went on an 11-2 run
to take a 15-13 lead 3: 12 later. But Southern Miss came
right back, matching it with an 11-2 run of its own to take
a 24-17 lead with 9:03 to play in the half.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Preston Purifoy nailed a
3-pointer with 3. 2 seconds remaining to lead UAB to a
67-66 victory over Southern Miss on Wednesday night.
With the Blazers trailing by two, Purifoy was open
and let loose a high-arching shot that rolled around the
rim before falling through the net. UAB’s Jamarr Sanders
scored all 18 of his points in the second half to lead the
Blazers.
Gary Flowers and R.L. Horton each scored 16 for the
Golden Eagles. Flowers made an 18-footer with 22 seconds
remaining that looked like it might be the game-winner
before Purifoy’s heroics.
Flowers was the one defending Purifoy on his shot,
jumping out to put a hand in his face. But it didn’t matter.
Purifoy, a freshman, adjusted his jumper so that it hung in
the air for what seemed like forever before going through.
Though he was averaging just four points per game
coming into Wednesday, Purifoy ranks first on the team
with a 46 percent 3-point shooting percentage.
UAB ( 21-7, 11-4) clinched at least a share of the Conference USA title.
Southern Miss ( 21-8, 9-6) led the entire game until UAB’s
Ovie Soko hit a short jumper to put the Blazers ahead 38-36
early in the second half.
ORLANDO, Fla. – A.J. Rompza’s three-pointer with three
seconds left capped off a ten-point comeback as Southern
Miss fell to UCF, 65-64, Saturday night at UCF Arena.
R.L. Horton led Southern Miss with 20 points and
four rebounds. Maurice Bolden added 15 points and six
rebounds. Gary Flowers, who came into the game second
in Conference USA with 19. 8 points, was held to just six
points on 1-of- 9 shooting, his lowest output of the year.
Two free throws by R.L. Horton gave Southern Miss a
59-50 lead with 7: 13 to play. However, the Golden Eagles
failed to score on their next five possessions, as UCF went
on a 10-0 run, capped off by A.J. Tyler’s three-pointer that
gave UCF its first lead since midway through the first half.
Lay-ups by Bolden and Horton gave Southern Miss a
