HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss held off a furious
Marshall comeback to defeat the Thundering Herd, 67-60.
Gary Flowers and D.J. Newbill both recorded their fifth
double-doubles of the year. Flowers scored 20 points and
pulled down 12 rebounds, while Newbill had 12 points and
10 boards. Angelo Johnson scored 13 points and had seven
assists, and Josimar Ayarza added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Southern Miss led 61-48 with 4: 45 to play after two free
throws by Flowers. Marshall then went on a 12-2 run to pull
within three points with 35 seconds remaining. DeAndre
Kane made the first of two free throws, and R.L. Horton got
the rebound and was fouled. Horton missed both attempts
from the charity stripe, but Maurice Bolden grabbed the
offensive board, put the ball back and was fouled. Bolden
converted the three-point play to push the lead to six points.
The Thundering Herd had three more attempts to score,
but could not convert.
The Golden Eagles opened the game scoring eight of
the first ten points. The teams went back and forth before a
jumper and a three by Kane pulled Marshall to within one
point, 14-13, with 11: 32 to play in the first half.
However, Southern Miss went on a 16-5 run over the
next 6:01 to lead by 11. A three-pointer by Dago Pena got
the Herd to within eight points, but they would get no closer
the rest of the half, as Southern Miss held a 36-24 lead at
the break.
DeAndre Kane led Marshall with 20 points and five
rebounds. Damier Pitts had nine points and five boards and
Nigel Spikes added seven points and nine rebounds.
Southern Miss, who came into the game allowing a
league- worst 50.6% from the field in league games, allowed
Marshall to hit just 33.3-percent (20-of- 60) from the floor
while connecting on 23-of- 58 ( 39.7%) themselves. They
also hit just 25.0-percent (3-of- 12) from behind the arc, but
allowed just 6-of- 20 ( 30.0%) by the Herd.
The Golden Eagles held a big advantage at the line,
hitting 69.2-percent (18-of- 26) while Marshall connected
on just 14-of- 28 ( 50.0%). They also outrebounded the Herd,
49-to- 39, and scored 21 second chance points to Marshall’s
eight.

a three of his own, and Flowers connected on a three-point
play to give the Black and Gold its first lead of the game,
47-45, with 7: 11 to play.
A free throw by Johnson and a three-pointer by Horton
gave Southern Miss a six-point advantage. Lay-ups by Culpepper
and Julyan Stone pulled the Miners to within two points. But,
the Golden Eagles went on an 11-2 run to clinch the victory.
Claude Britton led UTEP with 21 points on 10-of- 11
shooting. Culpepper was held to just 14 points, and Stone
added nine rebounds.
Southern Miss shot 45.3% (24-of- 53) from the field,
including 54.2% in the second half. UTEP was 42.0%
(21-of- 50) from the floor. The Golden Eagles were 7-of- 21
( 33.3%) from three-point range, while holding the Miners
to just 30.0% (3-of- 10). The Black and Gold also won the
rebounding battle, 37-to- 28.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Tarik Black had 17 points and nine
rebounds, and Will Barton added 16 points, including two
key baskets down the stretch, as Memphis defeated Southern
Miss, 67-61, on Saturday night.
It was the 16th straight victory for Memphis ( 19-6, 7-3
Conference USA) in the series, as the Tigers weathered a
12-point first-half lead by the Golden Eagles ( 18-6, 7-4).
Barton had a pair of layups in the final minute and Chris
Crawford added a pair of free throws with 5 seconds left to
seal the victory.
Southern Miss’ Gary Flowers, the conference’s leading
scorer at 20. 2, scored 14 before fouling out with 4: 50 left.
D.J. Newbill also had 14 points and Maurice Bolden finished
with 13 points and eight rebounds.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss outscored U TEP
36-10 over the final 15: 25 to erase a 13-point deficit and
defeat the Miners, 64-51.
R.L. Horton led the Golden Eagles with 20 points. D.J.
Newbill recorded his sixth double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and pulling down a career-high 16 rebounds.
Gary Flowers had 13 points and four blocks, and Angelo
Johnson added 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
U TEP led 29-26 at the half. Johnson opened the second
half with a jumper to pull USM to within one point. However,
the Miners went on a 12-0 run to take its largest lead of the
game, 41-28, just 4: 20 into the second half.
But, Newbill’s three-pointer sent Southern Miss on a
13-2 run over the next 5: 15. A trey by Randy Culpepper
pushed UTEP’s lead to 45-41. But, Johnson answered with

past East Carolina, 72-55.
With the victory, Southern Miss head coach Larry
Eustachy joins Lee Floyd and M.K. Turk as the only Golden
Eagles head coaches with three-plus 20 win seasons.
Flowers was 13-of- 20 from the field, including scoring
21 points in the first half. Maurice Bolden was the only
other Golden Eagle in double-figures, scoring 11 points and
pulling down six rebounds. D.J. Newbill had eight points
and nine boards. R.L. Horton recorded seven points and
five rebounds, and Angelo Johnson added seven assists.
Southern Miss led 36-30 at the half. But the Golden
Eagles came out in the second half and blew the game wide
open, beginning the half on 20-6 run over the initial 6: 46
to take a 56-36 lead. ECU pulled to within 14, 60-46, with
7: 25 to play, but that’s as close as they would get.
The first half saw three ties and 12 lead changes. Flowers
scored 16 of Southern Miss’ first 22 points. However, the
Golden Eagles only led 22-20. They extended their lead to
26-20 on layups by Horton and Josimar Ayarza. But, ECU
scored six straight points to tie the game at 26 with 4: 21 to
play in the half.
