GREENVILLE, N.C. – Southern Miss got its most balanced
game of the season, placing six players in double-figures in
an 84-77 victory over East Carolina from Minges Coliseum.
It is the fourth straight victory over the Pirates and ninth
in the last ten meetings.
Gary Flowers led the Eagles with 17 points and eight
rebounds. Sai’Quon Stone had 13 points, including 9-of-
11 from the charity stripe. D.J. Newbill had 13 points and
eight rebounds. R.L. Horton and Maurice Bolden each
had 11 points, and Angelo Johnson added 10 points and
five assists.
Southern Miss led 37-35 at the break. Bolden scored
eight of the Eagles first 10 points through the first 4: 20 of
the second half, but Eagles only held a 47-45 lead.
ECU scored eight of the next 11 points over the next
5: 14 to take a 53-50 lead. But, Johnson connected on consecutive three-pointers to give Southern Miss a 56-53 lead.
After three straight ECU free throws tied the game, Johnson
hit two from the charity stripe, and Darrius Morrow hit a
lay-up to tie the game for the final time.
Stone gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good with a
three-point play with 7: 58 to play. The teams traded points
over the next 1: 45. But Southern Miss went on a 14-6 run
to take its largest lead of the game, 77-68, with 1: 20 to play.
But the Pirates did not go away. ECU pulled within five.
After Stone and Morrow traded a pair of free throws, Stone
and Newbill each hit one-of-two free throws for an 81-75
lead with 33 second left. Jamar Abrams hit a lay-up to again
pull within four with 16 seconds left.
After a foul and two free throws by Johnson, Brock
Young missed a three-pointer with eight second remaining,
and Flowers grabbed the rebound, sealing the victory.
The Black and Gold shot 55.1-percent (27-of- 49) from
the field, and was 6-of- 11 from three-point range. They also
connected on 80.0-percent (24-of- 30) from the free throw
line. East Carolina was 22-of- 43 ( 51.2%) from the floor,
but connected on just 30.0-percent (6-of- 20) from behind
the arc. They were also 27-of- 34 ( 79.4%) from the charity
stripe. Southern Miss also outrebounded ECU, 30-22.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss used a 16-1
second half run to break open a close game and defeat
Tulane, 67-54, Saturday afternoon at Reed Green Coliseum.
Gary Flowers recorded his fourth double-double of the
year, scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 rebounds to tie for
the team lead. R.L. Horton scored 12 points, and Maurice
Bolden had 11 points and six rebounds.
The Black and Gold entered the second half with a
34-22 lead. They pushed their lead to 40-24 through the
first 3: 48 of the half. However, Tulane connected on four
three-pointers, including a pair by Jordan Callahan, to go
on a 16-5 run and pull within 45-40 with 10: 24 to play.
But a three-point play by Flowers sent the Golden Eagles
on a 16-1 run to break the game open, as they took their
biggest lead of the game, 61-41, with just 2: 42 remaining.
The teams traded baskets to open the game. Tulane
connected on seven of its first 11 baskets of the game, but
only led 17-16 with 10:09 to play in the first half.
That’s when Southern Miss took over. The Golden Eagles
scored 12 straight points, including two straight treys by
Flowers and Bolden, as they closed the half on an 18-5 run
to lead 34-22 at the break.
Jordan Callahan led all scorers with 20 points for Tulane,
while pulling down six rebounds. Kendal Timmons added
18 points and six boards for the Green Wave.
Southern Miss, who came into the game allowing its
opponents to hit 52.9-percent in league play, held Tulane
to just 37.7% (20-of- 53) from the field, while connecting
on 21-of- 49 ( 42.9%). USM connected on 21-of- 27 ( 77.8%)
free throws while the Green Wave was just 4-of- 10 ( 40.0%).
Southern Miss also won the rebounding edge, 42-to- 29.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Gary Flowers scored 22 points
and Southern Miss defeated UAB 75-71 Wednesday night.
Gary Flowers led USM with 22 points and R.L. Horton
scored 14. D.J. Newbill had 11 and Josimar Ayarza added 10.
The Golden Eagles ( 17-5, 6-3 Conference USA) trailed
by as many as 11 in the first half, but held the Blazers ( 15-6,
5-3) to 38.1% shooting in the second ( 8 of 21).
Southern Miss shot 43.8% for the game ( 28 of 64), and
moved into a tie with UTEP for first in the conference. It was
the first time in 12 games this season UAB lost when holding
an opponent to less than 45% shooting from the field.
The Golden Eagles were outscored 8-3 to open the
second, but scored nine straight and pushed the lead to as
many as 13, 66-53, on R.L. Horton’s layup with 5:06 to play.
The Blazers cut it to three, 72-69, but Southern Miss went
3 of 4 from the free-throw line the rest of the way to seal it.
Dexter Fields had 24 points and Jamarr Sanders 22 for
UAB.
