HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Larry Eustachy watched with a
big grin as his players jumped into the stands, waving towels
and celebrating with the student section after Southern Miss
beat No. 22 UCF, 86-69, on Saturday.
Like everyone else in black and gold, he was enjoying
the program’s first victory over a ranked opponent at Reed
Green Coliseum in a quarter century.
R.L. Horton scored 18 points and D.J. Newbill added
17 as the Golden Eagles beat a ranked team for the first time
since 2004 and the first time on their home court since 1986.
Gary Flowers and Maurice Bolden each had 16 points
for the Golden Eagles ( 14-3, 3-1 Conference USA), who
used a 21-2 run midway through the second half to turn a
four-point deficit into a 68-53 lead.
It was a crucial victory for Southern Miss, which is expected to compete for the conference title and has another
showdown looming with Memphis.
Horton was terrific during the decisive stretch, hitting a
3-pointer, completing a conventional three-point play and
throwing a perfect alley-oop pass for a thunderous dunk by
Flowers.
UCF ( 14-2, 1-2) has lost two in a row after starting the
season on a school-record 14-game winning streak. The
Knights, who earned the first national ranking in program
history on Dec. 20, will likely fall out of the polls.
Marcus Jordan scored 15 first-half points and finished
with a team-high 20 for UCF. But after a strong start, he
went only 2 of 8 from the field in the second half.
The matchup against a Top 25 team attracted a raucous
crowd of 5,023, easily the largest of the season.
Though Southern Miss had balanced scoring, Horton
stuck out with his overall game. He shot 6 of 11 from the
floor, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range. He also made
four of five free throws and had six rebounds and five assists.
The Golden Eagles outrebounded UCF 37-28 and shot
51.6% from the field, including 62.1% in the second half.
UCF made 11 of 26 ( 42.3%) shots from 3-point range,
but couldn’t overcome the big Southern Miss rally in the
second half. The Knights also committed 16 turnovers.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Charles Carmouche hit a
3-pointer with 1. 2 seconds remaining to give Memphis a
76-75 victory over Southern Miss Wednesday.
Memphis ( 14-4, 3-1 Conference USA) climbed out of
an 18-point first-half deficit to claim its 15th straight win in
the series, dating back to 2004. Will Barton had 15 points
to lead four Memphis players in double figures.
Carmouche’s clutch shot capped an entertaining game
that featured multiple big shots in the final mintues.
Memphis led 71-66 with 2: 51 remaining, but Southern
Miss had one rally left, taking a 74-73 lead on R.L. Horton’s
15-foot jumper with 16 seconds remaining.
Horton hit one out of two free throws with five seconds
left to give Southern Miss a 75-73 lead, setting up Memphis’
game-winner. Joe Jackson sprinted down the court with the
basketball and hit Carmouche in stride at the 3-point line,
and the junior’s shot was nearly perfect, barely touching the
rim and setting off a raucous celebration.
Southern Miss ( 14-4, 3-2) cruised to a 29-11 lead with
7: 43 remaining in the first half, but Memphis brought it to
40-29 on Joe Jackson’s 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
Gary Flowers led the Golden Eagles with 21 points and
Horton added 18.
The loss was crushing for Southern Miss, which was
receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll for the
first time in a decade. The Golden Eagles lost despite a
30-8 edge in free-throw attempts and forcing 18 Memphis
turnovers.
The Tigers were without starting forward Wesley Witherspoon, who missed his second straight game after being
suspended for an “internal matter.” Memphis was sloppy,
especially early, with 10 turnovers in the first half.
But the Tigers recovered, scoring 47 second-half points.
Chris Crawford scored 12 points and Carmouche added
11 for Memphis. Tarik Black had nine points and eight
rebounds.
DALLAS, Texas – SMU shot 69.8% from the floor as
Southern Miss dropped its second straight game, 79-65, to
SMU, Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum.
The Mustangs shooting percentage is the second most
ever for a Southern Miss opponent. It is also the second
highest in a Conference USA game.
Angelo Johnson led the Golden Eagles with 16 points,
including four three-pointers. Gary Flowers added 12 points.
R.L. Horton, Sai’Quon Stone and D.J. Newbill all scored
nine points.
Flowers hit a jumper to give Southern Miss an early
2-0 lead 57 seconds into the game. But, SMU went on an
11-2 run over the next 5: 27. The Golden Eagles pulled to
within three points on a Newbill jumper, but the Mustangs
extended their lead to 22-12, their biggest of the first half,
midway through the half as they connected on their first
five three-pointers.
After trading baskets, Southern Miss went on a 14-5 run,
culminating with a Johnson trey with 39 second remaining
to tie the game at 31. However, Mike Walker hit SMU’s
seventh three-pointer of the half with four seconds remaining to send SMU into halftime with a 34-31 lead.
Johnson and Ne wbill started the second half with a pair
of three-pointers to give Southern Miss a 37-34 advantage.
However, the lead would be short-lived, as Collin Mangrum
and Robert Clinkscales connected on three’s of their own
to give SMU a 40-37 lead.
Johnson tied the game at 40 with another trey 4:04 into
the second stanza, but SMU went on a 12-2 run over the
next 4: 34 to take a 52-42 advantage. Southern Miss would
get no closer than seven points, as the Mustangs led by as
many as 18.
Papa Dia was a perfect 10-of- 10 from the field, as he led
all players with 23 points and nine rebounds. Robert Nyakundi
scored 16 points, Mangrum had 15 and Clinkscales added 12.
Southern Miss shot 42.9-percent from the field (21-of-
49). The Mustangs connected on 12-of- 18 ( 66.7-percent)
