Sai’Quon Stone added 15 points and five rebounds for
the Golden Eagles, hitting 7-of- 9 free throws. R.L Horton
had 11 points, and Gary Flowers also contributed 10 point
and six boards.
Mike McCall paced Saint Louis with 19 points on 7-of-
11 shooting, hitting five of the Billikens’ 10 3-pointers.
Southern Miss shot 43.6-percent (24-of- 55) from the
field, while Saint Louis connected on 24-of- 50 ( 48.0%)
shooting.The Golden Eagles hit 80.0-percent (24-of- 30) from
the charity stripe, and SLU was just 69.2-percent (9-of- 13).
Southern Miss also outrebounded the Billikens, 35-to- 26.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss connected on 12
free throws over the final 2: 34 to pull away from Savannah
State, 64-54, and win the Hardwood Club Holiday Tournament.
Gary Flowers was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after recording 28 points and a career-high 15
rebounds, while also blocking three shots. R.L. Horton
scored 13 points and was named to the All-Tournament
Team. Sai’Quon Stone added nine points, including 7-of- 8
free throws, and six rebounds.
Savannah State took an early 5-0 lead, but the Golden
Eagles hit five of their first six shots to take a 13-8 lead five
minutes into the game. However, they connected on just
five of their final 18 shots the rest of the half.
The Tigers then went on a 7-0 run to take a 15-13 lead
over the next 2: 26. The teams traded leads before Savannah
State grabbed a 23-18 lead with 3: 46 to play. But, Flowers
and junior Angelo Johnson led Southern Miss on a 12-2 run
to end the half, capped off by a three-pointer from Flowers
with two seconds left, as the Black and Gold entered halftime
with a 30-25 advantage.
Southern Miss quickly increased its lead, as they opened
the second half on a 10-1 run over the first 5: 39 to take its
largest lead of the game at 40-26.
However, over the next seven minutes, Savannah State
chipped away at the lead. Three-pointers by Joshua Montgomery and Jovonni Shuler helped the Tigers close the gap
to 47-44 with 7: 23 to play.
But, the Golden Eagles would keep SSU within arm’s
reach the rest of the game.
Southern Miss was held to just 38.6% (17-of- 44), but
connected on 26-of- 33 (78.8%) from the charity stripe. SSU
shot 34.0% (17-of- 50), including 10-of- 29 from behind the
arc. But the Tigers were just 10-of- 13 from the free throw
line. The Black and Gold also outrebounded Savannah State,
38-to- 28.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss got back to its
winning ways, knocking off in-state foe Mississippi Valley
State, 91-46, in the opening round of the Hardwood Club
Holiday Tournament at Reed Green Coliseum.
Gary Flowers led all scorers with 19 points, while pulling
down seven rebounds. LaShay Page scored a season-high
17 points. D.J. Newbill recorded his team-leading fourth
double-double of the season, dropping in 11 points and
pulling down 10 rebounds.
R.L. Horton scored nine points, and Angelo Johnson
recorded seven points, seven assists, and six rebounds.
The Golden Eagles outrebounded MVSU, 51-41. It is
the fifth time this year that the Black and Gold pulled down
at least 50 boards.
Southern Miss shot 47.6% (30-of- 63) from the floor,
including 11-of- 24 ( 45.8%) from behind the arc. The Golden
Eagles held the Delta Devils to just 20.3% shooting, the third
lowest field goal percentage ever for a Southern Miss opponent.
Southern Miss outscored MVSU 14-4 in the paint en
route to a 41-20 halftime lead, and led by as many as 49 in
the second half.
Mississippi Valley center Paul Crosby scored 12 to lead
the Delta Devils and D’Angelo Jackson made 8-of- 10 free
throws on his way to 10 points.
CANCUN, Mexico – Travis Franklin had 25 points and
nine rebounds, leading Colorado State to a 63-58 victory over
Southern Miss in the Cancun Governor’s Cup championship.
Andy Ogide scored 15 for Colorado State, which made
18 of 21 free throws. Franklin also had three steals.
Gary Flowers had 22 points and nine rebounds for the
Golden Eagles ( 9-2), who had won four straight. Reserve
LaShay Page made three 3-pointers and scored 14.
R.L. Horton made a 3-pointer with 2:03 left to give
Southern Miss a 56-55 lead but Colorado State responded
with a 7-0 run. Franklin made two foul shots, Ogide had a
three-point play, and Jesse Carr capped the surge with two
free throws with 31 seconds remaining.
Flowers was named to the All-Tournament Team, and
Franklin was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding
Player.
