State 77-57 on Wednesday, has dropped four of its last six
overall, leaving Montgomery two wins short of 600 for his
career. Southern Miss shot just 32. 4 percent in the first half,
yet led 41-40 at the break following Page’s 3-pointer with
23. 9 seconds left. Page’s basket capped a 10-4 run for the
Eagles, who held the Bears to just three baskets over the
final 10 minutes of the half.
The two teams combined for 30 fouls in the opening
20 minutes, with Cal attempting as many free throws ( 21)
as it did shots from the floor. Southern Miss, which took
37 shots from the floor and 17 from the line, also held the
Bears without an offensive rebound in the first half.

The game was a slow-moving affair from the outset.
Southern Miss took an early 6-2 lead three minutes into the
game. But over the next seven minutes, the Golden Eagles
missed their next eight shots. Ahyaro Phillips converted a
three-point play to put the Eagles back up, 9-6.
However, Mike Smith tied the game on a three-point
play of his own, and ETSU took its only lead on an Adam
Sollazzo free throw with 9: 40 to play in the first half.
Southern Miss retook the lead on free throws by
Sai’Quon Stone. With the Eagles ahead 13-12, and 7: 54 to
play, USM closed the half on a 20-7 run, capped off by a
Johnson three-pointer at the buzzer.
Williams led the Bucs with 16 points. Tubbs scored 14,
and Smith added 13 points and five rebounds. Isiah Brown
had a team-high eight rebounds for ETSU.
Southern Miss shot 48.9-percent (22-of- 45) from the
field, while holding East Tennessee State to just 23-of- 65
( 35.4%) shooting. The Golden Eagles connected on 75-per-
cent (15-of- 20) from the charity stripe, and ETSU was just
58.8-percent (10-of- 17). Southern Miss was outrebounded
for just the second time this year, 37-to- 35.

BERKELEY, Calif. – Gary Flowers scored the final 12
points for Southern Miss, including a 3-foot turnaround
jumper off the backboard with 3 seconds left, lifting the
Golden Eagles to an 80-78 win over California on Sunday.
Flowers finished with 28 points on 10-of- 16 shooting,
Josimar Ayarza added 17 and LaShay Page scored 12 for
Southern Miss.
Harper Kamp scored 20 points for California ( 5-4),which
missed two free throws in the final 45 seconds. Jorge Gutierrez
also missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer when his
shot bounced off the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded.
Southern Miss trailed 73-68 with 3: 25 remaining when
Flowers took over.
The senior forward scored on a short jumper before
Cal’s Nigel Carter made a 3-pointer. Flowers answered with
another short jumper, then made two free throws before
stealing an inbounds pass by the Bears and scoring to tie
the game at 76.
After Gutierrez missed one of his free-throw attempts,
Flowers made a pair from the line to give the Eagles a 78-77
lead. Allen Crabbe’s free throw tied the game again for Cal,
but Flowers backed Gutierrez into the paint, then turned and
banked a short shot off the backboard for the game-winner.
The Bears were on the verge of turning the game into
a blowout before Flowers’ heroics.
Kamp scored 12 straight points coming out of halftime
and Carter made a pair of 3-pointers to spark a 12-2 run
that gave Cal a 68-61 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left.
But the Bears went cold after Markhuri Sanders-Frison’s
short jumper. Cal made only one basket in the final 5 minutes - a Carter 3-pointer that gave the Bears a 76-70 lead.
Carter finished with a career-high 16 points for the
Bears while Gutierrez had 10 points and matched his career

CANCUN, Mexico – Southern Miss withstood a furious
rally by East Tennessee State to defeat the Buccaneers, 64-60,
in the first round of the inaugural Cancun Governor’s Cup.
Gary Flowers recorded his first double-double of the
year with game-highs of 19 points and 10 rebounds. D.J.
Newbill scored 11 points and grabbed five boards, and
LaShay Page had 10 points.
Southern Miss led 33-19 at the half. The Golden Eagles
scored nine of the first 13 points to open the second half
to take its largest lead of the game, 41-23, just 4: 58 into
the half. However, Justin Tubbs led ETSU back, scoring 14
straight points for the Bucs and leading them on a 20-5 run
over the next 5: 38 to pull within 48-43.
The Black and Gold pushed the lead back out to 11,
56-45, on a Page lay-up with 5: 50 to play. But once again,
East Tennessee State came back, as the Eagles would not
score again until 1: 27 remaining.
A jumper and two free throws by D.J. Newbill gave
Southern Miss a 60-53 advantage with 44 seconds left.
ETSU pulled to within two points with six second remaining on a Micah Williams three-pointer. But, junior Angelo
Johnson hit two free throws and then stole the ball on the

CANCUN, Mexico – Angelo Johnson scored 21 points
and Southern Miss rallied from a 10-point deficit to defeat
former Conference USA foe Saint Louis, 74-67, in the Semifinals of the Cancun Governor’s Cup in Cancun, Mexico.
The Golden Eagles fell behind 27-17 with 7: 21 left in
the first half, but tied the game in the second before trailing
by four, 60-56, with 6: 43 left.
Johnson made a three-point play to cap a 7-2 spurt, giving
Southern Miss the lead for good at 64-62 with 3: 37 left.
The Golden Eagles hit 8-of- 10 free throws in the final
2: 15.
The Billikens ( 5-6), who led 35-33 at halftime, had a
49-40 advantage with 14: 17 to go.
An 11-2 run by Southern Miss, including four points
from Johnson, tied it at 51.
