TAMPA, Fla. - Southern Miss closed the game on a 20-
14 run, including scoring the final 15 points, as the Golden
Eagles won its season-opener at USF, 60-53.
Gary Flowers scored a game-high 15 points and grabbed
five rebounds and R.L. Horton scored 14 points and had
three assists.
Southern Miss led 32-28 at the half. Flowers and Horton
each hit jumpers in the first two minutes of the second half.
But, the Eagles were held to just one basket over the next 10
minutes as USF took its first lead before grabbing a 49-40
advantage with eight minutes to play.
From there, Southern Miss stepped up its defense and
applied pressure in the offensive end. Angelo Johnson hit
two free throws followed by an Ahyaro Phillips dunk cut
the deficit to five.
After Augustus Gilchrist connected on a turnaround
baseline jumper, Jawanza Poland and D.J. Newbill traded
free throws as the Bulls pushed its lead back to eight points,
53-45, with 4: 19 to play.
Following a jumper by Phillips, Flowers and Newbill
took over. Newbill hit a jumper and then hit a pair of free
throws to cut the lead to two points. A lay-up by Flowers
tied the game at 53, and Newbill connected on a runner in
the lane with 40 seconds remaining, giving Southern Miss
its first lead since 3: 36 into the second half.
Flowers connected on three straight free throws, and
Horton closed the scoring with two of his own.
Southern Miss shot 42.0% (21-of- 50) for the game,
while USF was just 34.6% (18-of- 52) from the field. The
Golden Eagles, after connecting on just 4-of- 9 free throws
in the first half, finished the game 16-of- 25 ( 64.0%). The
Bulls held the rebounding advantage, 42-36.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss got its biggest
scoring output in two years, as it rolled over South Alabama,
93-58, in its 2010-11 home opener.
The 35-point margin is the largest for either team in the
36 meetings between the two schools. The 37 field goals are
the most since recording 51 against Blue Mountain in 2007.
R.L. Horton led all players with 25 points. Josimar Ayarza
recorded his second career double-double, scoring 17 points
and grabbing 10 rebounds. Torye Pelham scored a career-high
15 points, while Angelo Johnson was just one point and two
assists away from a triple-double, scoring nine points, while
adding career-highs of 10 rebounds and eight assists.
Southern Miss played without Gary Flowers, and it
showed at the beginning of the game, missing its first five
shots. With the game tied at 11 and 12: 16 to play, the Black
and Gold went on a 17-0 run over the next 4: 49 to go up
28-11. The Jaguars could get no closer the 12 the rest of the
half, as USM headed into the break with a 38-20 lead.
The Eagles scored the first 19 points of the second half to
go up 57-20 just 4: 45 into the half. Southern Miss pushed its
lead to 41 points, and South Alabama would not get closer
than 27 points.
The Golden Eagles shot 54.4% (37-of- 68) from the floor,
while holding South Alabama to just 28.3% (17-of- 60),
including 18.5% in the first half. Southern Miss was also
9-of- 18 ( 50.0%) from behind the arc, and outrebounded
USA, 50-34.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss men’s basketball team got out to a big lead in the first half and maintained
it the rest of the way, defeating McNeese State, 75-60.
Gary Flowers had 24 points and eight rebounds to lead
the Black and Gold. D.J. Newbill recorded his first career
double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing a game-high
11 boards. R.L. Horton had 14 points, and Angelo Johnson
added eight points and nine assists.
The teams traded baskets early on, as the Cowboys took
an 8-5 lead. But USM scored the next eight points, including
five by Flowers to take a 13-8 lead 4: 37 into the game.
Southern Miss extended its lead to 28-18 before MSU
pulled to within five points. However, the Black and Gold
outscored the Cowboys, 18-3 over the final 6: 26 of the first
half to take a 47-28 lead at the break.
McNeese State scored eight of the first 12 points in the
second half. But Southern Miss scored the next eight, as
they took their biggest lead of the game, 60-36, with 12: 17
to play. The Cowboys slowly were able to chip away at the
deficit, but would get no closer than 13 points.
Southern Miss shot 43.8-percent (28-of- 64) for the game,
while holding the Cowboys to 29.5-percent (18-of- 61). The
Golden Eagles also won the rebounding battle, 50-42.
