What They Are Saying
About Larry Eustachy
“I have known Larry for a number of years and he’s
a solid coach and tactician. Southern Mississippi is
fortunate to have a coach of his caliber. I know that
the future seasons for Golden Eagle basketball will be
successful with Larry at the helm.”
Ben Howland, Head Basketball Coach, UCLA
“Of all the teams I’ve competed against, there are not
many that reflect the personality of their head coach
more than a Larry Eustachy team. They are always
tough, hard-nosed and fundamentally sound. You
know you are in for an intense, hard-fought game.”
Rick Barnes, Head Basketball Coach, Texas
“Larry Eustachy is a tremendous basketball coach, a
tremendous person and a great family man. He’ll do
a tremendous job at Southern Miss and will bring a
winning attitude. More importantly, he’ll make his
players better students and better people.”
Kelvin Sampson, Assistant Coach, Milwaukee Bucks
“Larry Eustachy is an excellent basketball coach. In
watching him in practices and games at Iowa State, I
felt he taught rebounding and defense as well as any
coach in America, and he has built consistent winners. His teams are disciplined and tough minded,
and I expect him to bring those same attributes to
Southern Miss.”
“Larry is an excellent basketball coach. He is
someone who I talk with four or five times a year
to get some ideas on the fundamentals of the
game; rebounding, toughness, defensive intensity and other things. Not very many coaches
have taken three different schools to the NCAA
Tournament (Idaho, Utah State, Iowa State), so I
have a lot of respect for Larry.”
Trent Johnson, Head Basketball Coach, LSU
basketball coach when he was named the
2000 National Coach of the Year by both
the Associated Press and the United States
Basketball Writers Association.
In his five-year career at Iowa State, the
two-time Big 12 Coach of the Year led the
Cyclones to a 101-59 record, back-to-back
Big 12 Conference Championships (2000
and 2001) and an AP Top 10 ranking both
years (No. 6 in 2000 and No. 10 in 2001).
His squads made consecutive trips to the
NCAA Tournament in 2000 ( 32-5) and
Eustachy’s Year-by-Year Record
“Larry is one of my dearest friends in basketball. He
is someone who I confide in a bit, and he is a good
teacher and coach for our sport.”
Larry Brown, Head Coach, Charlotte Bobcats

“So much has been talked about Larry’s abilities
as a coach, and I think the National Coach of the
Year honor speaks for itself. Southern Miss is get-
ting much more than an on-the-court coach. He is a
great recruiter, and he has the ability to energize the
community. Great days are ahead for Southern bas-
ketball. It wouldn’t surprise me is he wins a confer-
ence championship during his time at Southern Miss,
because he has done so everywhere else.”

“Larry Eustachy has breathed new life into the Southern
Mississippi program. He has made it relevant again. It’s
not an easy rebuilding project, but give him time. He
has turned his life around and as a result Southern Miss
will be better served by getting Eustachy later in life.”
