John Cox
Director of Sports Broadcasting
“Voice of the Golden Eagles”
Veteran sportscaster John Cox, Director of Sports Broadcasting, is in
his 34th season at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Among his many duties at Southern Miss, Cox handles the play-
by-play broadcasts of Golden Eagle football, basketball and baseball. He also hosts the
Southern Miss Sports Today television shows with Head Football Coach Larry Fedora
and Head Basketball Coach Larry Eustachy, pregame radio shows and Golden Eagle
Hotline radio call-in shows.
Prior to moving to the radio booth, Cox called the play-by-play on delayed telecasts
of Southern Miss basketball from 1978 to 1981. In 1982, he handled the radio play-by-play duties for Golden Eagle football and switched back to the delayed television
broadcasts of Southern Miss football for three years before assuming his current radio
responsibilities.
In 1982, Cox began broadcasting Southern Miss baseball games and over the years,
he also has handled broadcasts of Southern Miss women’s basketball and has worked on
the Fox Sports Net South and Comcast Sports Southeast (CSS) telecasts of Southern Miss
baseball.
Four times he has been selected as Mississippi’s Sportscaster of the Year, most recently in 1999.
A native of Middletown, Ohio, Cox received his bachelor’s degree in radio, television
and film from Southern Miss in 1978. He has two daughters, Joye, a graduate of Millsaps
College, and Erin.
IMG College of Winston-Salem, N.C., a national leader in collegiate sports market-
ing, has served as the exclusive rights holder
for Southern Miss Athletics since 2000 and
will continue its partnership with Southern
Miss through June of 2017.
The company maintains
a staff and sales office at
the Athletic Center on the
Southern Miss campus
and works closely with
the Southern Miss athletics
staff to develop, produce,
and sell all sponsorship
and promotional activities
surrounding Golden Eagle
Athletics.
The sales team, which
has enjoyed great success
and was cited by the organi-
zation as having the highest
percentage growth of its
corporate sponsorship pro-
duction of any of the athletic
programs represented in the
company in 2005, is headed
by Jamie Martin, Assistant
Vice President/General
Manager, who has been with
the IMG team since 2003
and who also was graduated
at Southern Miss. In 2005,
she was the recipient of the
“President’s Cup” as the out-
standing sales representative
in the company. In January
of 2009, Darren McPhail
joined the staff as Assistant General Manager,
followed by Caleb Swann as Account Executive
in the Spring of 2011. Broadcasts of Southern
Miss athletics can be heard throughout the
state of Mississippi and into parts of Louisiana,
Alabama, Arkansas, and the Florida panhandle.
The baseball program enjoyed unprecedented
coverage in its 2009 postseason with its largest
ever network, which included five stations dur-
ing its College World Series run.

Hattiesburg-Laurel, boasting a powerful
100,000 watt signal, will again serve as the
