Game 30
Memphis 71, Southern Miss 63
In addition to her performance from the charity stripe,
Lee also hit 4-of- 7 field goals and finished with six
rebounds and an assist. Ramses Lonlack was next for
Memphis with 11 points while Mary Jackson and Brittany
Carter both scored 10. Alex Winchell tallied a team-best
five assists and the duo of Jackson and Nicole Dickson
shared team-high steals honors with three apiece.
Southern Miss scored the first four points of the game
and led by as many as five at 17-12 with 11: 43 left to
play in the first half. Memphis cut the deficit to one twice
and eventually tied the contest on 19-all courtesy of a
Taylor Mumphrey free throw at the 9: 45 mark. A Jackson
basket 2:02 later broke the deadlock and the Tigers never
trailed again.
Jackson’s shot was part of a 12-0 run that saw Memphis
turn a 19-16 deficit into a 28-19 advantage in the span
of 5: 43. The Memphis lead swelled to as many as 12 at
34-22 with 2: 43 to go before the break and a 3-pointer
by Southern Miss’ Danielle Johnson made it a nine-point
affair heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
The two teams traded baskets to open the second
stanza, but Southern Memphis turned a 37-27 Memphis
lead into a three-point game when Niesha Pierce laid
one in at the 14: 47 mark to make it 41-38. Three minutes
and 39 seconds later, the Tigers were back up eight at
48-40, but the Golden Eagles scored five straight to make
it a 48-45 affair.
The score remained a three-point differential at
52-49 with 7: 56 left in regulation and it appeared as if
Memphis finally put enough distance between itself and
upset-minded Southern Miss as the Tigers used a 13-5
rally to push their advantage to double digits. The Eagles,
meanwhile, answered with a 6-0 streak to make it a four-point game at 65-61 with 1: 11 showing on the clock.
That, however, was as close as Southern Miss would get
the rest of the way as Memphis hit six straight free throws
and was able to run out the clock.
Geneshia Dunbar led Southern Miss with 17 points and
a game-high 10 rebounds, and was joined in the double-digit scoring club by Danielle Johnson who tallied 10
off the bench. Jamierra Faulkner led all players with
six assists while Rachel Vigers paced the Golden Eagle
defense with three thefts.

EL PASO, Texas – Four Tigers posted double-digit scoring totals, including an 18-point performance by center
Jasmine Lee, as sixth-seeded Memphis defeated No.
11 seed Southern Miss, 71-63, in the opening game of
the 2011 Buick Conference USA Women’s Basketball
Championship Wednesday afternoon at UTEP’s Memorial
Gym.
Lee, who was forced to leave the game early in the first
half after being undercut by a Golden Eagle defender,
played with a noticeable limp for much of the contest
but came up big with 10 free throws in 13 trips to the
line to help keep a frisky Golden Eagles squad at arms’
reach despite numerous late-game comeback attempts.
While Memphis led for the final 27: 43 or regulation
and led by as many as 10 twice in the second half, the
Golden Eagles refused to give in and made it a one-pos-session game on three separate occasions over the final
20 minutes of play. Each time, however, the Tigers had an
answer to extend their season.
With the win, Memphis improves to 20-11 on the year
and advances to take on No. 3 seed Rice on Thursday
in the quarterfinals. Tipoff for that ballgame is slated for
2: 30 p.m. (MST). Southern Miss, meanwhile, concluded
its 2010-11 season at 10-20.
