EL PASO, Texas – UTEP placed five players in
double figure scoring and shot 50 percent from the field
in defeating Southern Miss, 77-49, Thursday night in
Conference USA action.
Southern Miss ( 10-17, 5-9) placed three players in
double-figure scoring led by Tanesha Washington with 15
points. Jamierra Faulkner and Geneshia Dunbar chipped
in 11 and 10 points, respectively. Washington also led
the Eagles with eight rebounds.
UTEP’s Dietra Caldwell led the group with 15 points,
all on three-pointers, followed by Kelli Willingham with
14, Kayla Thornton added 11 and Ashley Milian and
Gloria Brown chipped in 10 points apiece
After playing evenly for the first 10 minutes of the
game, UTEP ( 14-12, 6-8) used a 17-4 run over a span of
7:08 in taking a 32-19 lead at the 3:04 mark in the half
and never looked back. Dietra Caldwell kick started the
run with a three-pointer after the team started the game
0-for- 7 from behind the arc. Caldwell connected on three
triples during that run. The teams traded baskets for the
final 2: 37 and UTEP led 38-28 at the half.
The Golden Eagles scored the first bucket to start
the second half to get the margin to 10, but the Miners
countered with an 18-5 run to push the lead to 56-33, as
five different players contributed to the run and Southern
Miss could not recover.
The Lady Eagles recorded 24 turnovers and UTEP
cashed in 24 points off the miscues.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Senior Day did not go as
planned for Southern Miss as Tanesha Washington collected her 10th double-double of the season with a
game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds in a 72-65 loss to
UCF Sunday.
The Lady Eagles fall to 10-18 and 5-10 in the league
while UCF solidified its second-place hold in the C-USA
standings in improving to 18-10 and 11-4.
Joining Washington in double-figure scoring was
Jamierra Faulkner and Geneshia Dunbar with 12 and 11
points, respectively.
Chelsie Wiley led the Knights with 18 points with
D’Nay Daniels and Aisha Patrick adding 16 points
apiece.
The Knights stormed out to a 23-13 lead midway
through the first half. The Knights got their offense rolling
as six different players contributed to building the lead.
However, Southern Miss began to chip away at the lead
as Washington and Dunbar ignited a 14-8 run in cutting
the lead to seven, 34-27, with 3: 39 remaining before the
half.
Danielle Johnson, who saw her first playing time since
the Dec. 28 game against Alabama, dropped in a basketball in between three-pointers by Leo Montalvo and
Ashia Kelly. The Lady Eagles closed the half with a 7-2
run in trailing 42-36 at intermission.
The Lady Eagles came out of half time outscoring UCF
7-2 in cutting the lead to 44-43 at the 15: 23 mark. UCF
then scored six straight to push the lead to 50-43. The
Golden Eagles got back-to-back baskets from Dunbar
and Faulkner to get within three. Southern Miss eventually whittled down the lead to just two, 53-51, by the 8: 12
mark. But just as quickly, UCF Wiley tossed in back-to-back treys for the 59-51 lead.
Southern Miss cut the lead to five on three occasions,
but UCF converted 6-of- 6 free throws down the stretch
to seal the win.
The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 52. 7
percent and held a slight edge in the rebounding category, 33-31. The two teams combined for 28 turnovers.
Southern Miss never led the in the game.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Leteidra Elliott led four
Marshall players in double figures with a game-high 21
points to lead the Thundering Herd past Southern Miss,
70-57, at the Cam Henderson Center in both team’s
regular-season finale here Thursday night.
The Lady Eagles ( 10-19 overall, 5-11 C-USA) will
hold the No. 11 seed in next week’s Conference USA
Tournament which will be played in El Paso, Texas. A
game time and an opponent will be named later in the
evening as the Lady Eagles open tourney play on Wed.,
March 9.
Southern Miss got a team-high 17 points from Tanesha
Washington, while Jameirra Faulkner added 16 points
and Niesha Pierce chipped in 13 and added 10
rebounds. Geneshia Dunbar also added 10 rebounds to
go along with six points for the Lady Eagles.
After the team’s traded the lead twice and enjoyed
seven ties in the opening half, Veronica Ruiz forced
the final tie of the opening half at 17-17 with a jumper
before the Herd went on to score the next five points,
including a 3-pointer from Elliot, to take a 25-21 advantage at the intermission.
Southern Miss, though, started the second half on fire
by outscoring the home squad on its senior night, 11-6,
to take a lead at 32-31 with 16: 44 to play after Faulkner’s
made jumper, but Marshall went on to score the next
11 points as Dorina Barrett and Elliott hit consecutive
3-pointers, and then Elliott converted two more consecutive buckets, to push the advantage to 10 at 42-32 with
14: 18 remaining,
