ORLANDO, Fla. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball team dropped its conference road opener to UCF by
a score of 67-43 Sunday afternoon.
Freshman Jamierra Faulkner led Southern Miss ( 6-9, 1-1)
with a game-high 17 points. UCF ( 9-6, 2-0) placed three players in double figures led by D’Nay Daniels with 16 points, followed by Jelisa Caldwell with 14 and Chelsie Wiley chipped
in 11. Daniels and Aisha Patrick grabbed 10 rebounds apiece.
Southern Miss started strong out of the gate, jumping out to
a 10-4 lead. UCF then used a 10-0 run over a span of 2: 14
in taking a 14-10 advantage at the 13: 10 mark. Rachel Vigers
ended the UCF run with a basket to get within 14-12.
UCF then held the Lady Eagles scoreless for the next 2: 51 as
the Knights extended their lead to 11 points, 23-12.
The teams traded baskets over a 5: 46 span and during
that time, USM got the lead under double figures, 30-22.
However, UCF ended the half scoring the last nine points
for a 39-22 halftime lead.
It took almost four minutes before either team scored
a basket in the second half, but the Lady Eagles got their
first points of the half with Faulkner scored on a layup at
the 13: 52 mark. Southern Miss managed to get the lead
under 20 only once in the half, 45-27, with 11:22re-
maining. UCF wasted little time in extending its lead
to as many as 28 and kept the 20-point margin for the
remainder of the game.
UCF held a 45-34 rebounding edge and shot 41. 9 percent
from the field while Southern Miss finished the game with a
31. 6 percent shooting from the field.

Houston 78, Southern Miss 59
HOUSTON, Texas – Junior Rachel Vigers scored a game-high 24 points and senior Tanesha Washington added a
double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds but it wasn’t
enough as the University of Houston knocked off Southern
Miss, 78-59, in Conference USA action Thursday night.
Courtney Taylor and Lesslee Mason scored 20 points
apiece for Houston ( 12-4, 3-0). Taylor also pulled down
12 rebounds and Porsche Landry chipped in 10 points.
Houston opened the game scoring the first five points
before Vigers hit a driving layup at the 16: 37 mark. From
there, Houston pushed its lead to 12-2 on a 7-0 run.
Washington scored the next three points in getting the
lead down to seven, 12-5. Taylor then hit four straight free
throws to give the Cougars an 11-point advantage. The
two teams traded baskets for the next five minutes before
UH used a 12-4 in taking a commanding 34-17 lead with
just over four minutes remaining in the half. USM then
countered with six straight points to get within 11, but
Houston scored the last seven points to end the half.
The Lady Eagles ( 6-10, 1-2) played evenly with the
Cougars through the first four minutes to start the second
half until Lesslee Mason sparked an 11-2 run in extending
the lead to 57-33. Following a Southern Miss timeout, the
Lady Eagles then rattled off nine straight points to cut the
lead to 15 points, 57-42, with 10: 41 remaining. Houston
came right back with a 9-0 run of its own. USM did get
the margin down to 16, but the first half lead was too
much to overcome.
Southern Miss won the battled of the boards, out-rebounding the Cougars, 52-47. Houston scored 44
points in the paint and 27 points off 27 USM turnovers.

Tulsa 74, Southern Miss 71
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s
basketball team suffered another setback in Conference
USA play, losing to Tulsa 74-71 Sunday evening.
Southern Miss ( 6-11, 1-3) placed four players in double-figure scoring led by senior Tanesha Washington with 18
points. Junior Rachel Vigers had 16 points while Geneshia
Dunbar and Brittany Johnson came off the bench to add
12 and 10 points, respectively. Jamierra Faulkner registered her fourth game with 11 assists.
Taleya Mayberry led Tulsa ( 5-7, 1-3) with a game-high
19 points followed by Chanice Scott with 18 and Amanda
Mason chipped in 13.
Tulsa scored the first five points of the game before
the Lady Eagles got on track and scored 16 unanswered
points over a 3: 14 span. Scott halted the USM run with a
three-point basket to get the score, 16-8. Johnson came
right back and added a bucket to push the lead to 10.
Scott answered with a basket to get the margin under 10.
From there, Southern Miss outscored Tulsa 13-3 in taking a 31-16 lead at the 6: 47 mark in the half. However,
Tulsa finally got its offense in gear and scored 11 straight
points to cut the lead to just five, 31-26. The Lady Eagles
went into intermission with a 37-32 lead.
Tulsa opened the second half with a 12-6 run and
took its first lead at 44-43. From there, the teams traded
baskets over the next 2: 59. With the score tied at 49-49,
Tulsa outscored Southern Miss, 9-3, in taking the lead
for good. The Golden Hurricane led by as many as eight
points, 62-54, with 7: 53 remaining, when USM scored
seven straight points to cut the lead to 62-61 with 4: 27
