QUEENS, N. Y. – Junior Rachel Vigers registered her
first double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds in a
losing effort as Southern Miss lost to No. 18 St. John’s by
a score of 81-50.
Freshman Jamierra Faulkner added 14 points for the
Lady Eagles to go with five assists and three steals. Southern Miss falls to 5-5 while St. John’s improved to 10-1.
St. John’s placed four players in double figure scoring
led by Eugeneia McPherson with a game-high 23 followed by Shenneika Smith with 19, Sky Lindsay and
Amanda Burakoski scored 10 points apiece.
Southern Miss scored the first two points of the game
on a put back by Vigers. St. John’s answered quickly with
a basket from Da’Shena Stevens. The two teams traded
baskets over 4: 36, then; St. John’s scored straight points
to push the lead to nine, 18-9. Vigers then scored seven
straight points to cut the Red Storm’s lead to 18-16 at the
11:01 mark.
For the next four minutes, it was all St. John’s as the
Storm used a 10-0 for their first double digit lead of the
game, 29-16. Tanesha Washington hit one of two free
throws before SJU tacked on another six points for a
35-17 lead. St. John’s ended the half with a 13-3 run for a
50-22 halftime lead.
The two teams traded baskets to start the second half,
but the Red Storm’s first-half lead was too much for the
Lady Eagles to overcome.
Southern Miss’ play improved in the second half as St.
John’s outscored the Lady Eagles, 31-28. Southern Miss
forced SJU into 13 turnovers while limited its turnovers
to just 10. For the second straight game, USM was held
below 30 percent shooting from the field, finishing the
game at 29. 9 percent.

QUEENS, N. Y. – The Southern Miss women’s basketball
lost for the second time in two days, falling to Fresno
State, 88-51.
The Lady Eagles continue to struggle shooting, finishing
the game shooting 34. 4 percent from the field.
Rachel Vigers led the Lady Eagles with 18 points and
Jamierra Faulkner added 15 points. Vigers and Geneshia
Dunbar had nine rebounds apiece.
Jaleesa Ross led Fresno State with a game-high 28 points
followed by Rosie Moult with 21. Hayley Munro chipped
in 12 points.
Frenso connected on 15-of- 36 from behind the arc
while USM did not hit a three-pointer, snapping a 167
consecutive game streak.
Frenso State jumped out to a 5-0 lead before the Lady
Eagles scored six straight points to take a 6-5 lead. For
the next three minutes, the teams played evenly. With the
score tied at 14-14 at the 11: 18 mark, Frenso then scored
10 unanswered points in taking a 24-14 lead. Vigers
converted on a three-point play to cut the lead to seven,
24-17, at the 6: 12 mark. However, Fresno ended the half
using a 16-2 run for a 40-19 lead at the half.
The Bulldogs opened the second half scoring the first
eight points, extending their lead to 48-19 and never
looked back. Midway through the second half, the lead
had swelled to 36.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women’s
basketball team shot 50 percent from the field and two
players scored 21 points apiece, but it wasn’t enough as
the Lady Eagles fell to Alabama, 88-78, Tuesday night.
Tanesha Washington and Rachel Vigers scored 21 points
each and Jamierra Faulkner chipped in 10 points for
Southern Miss as the Lady Eagles fell to 5-7 on the year.
Vigers was perfect from the line at 11-of- 11. Washington
added a double-double with 13 rebounds.
Tierney Jenkins paced the Crimson Tide with 22 points
followed by Jasmine Robinson with 19 and La Toya King
