Performance Materials is developing, testing
and formulating new composites for aerospace and marine applications. A partnership between GE Aviation and the School
is focused on composites development processing for the GEnx aircraft engine.

Graduate Research Fellowship recipients
Nicholas Treat and Brooks Abel have been
working in the research laboratory of Dr.
Charles McCormick, professor of polymer
science at Southern Miss, where they’ve
conducted preliminary research on polymer
nanocarriers for cancer
therapeutics.
• The University of
Southern Mississippi
Gulf Coast broke
ground on a $10 million Science Building on
the Gulf Park campus
in Long Beach in May
2011. The building will
feature nine teaching
laboratories, research
space, approximately 20
faculty offices, the associate dean’s office, and
an 80-seat instructional
classroom.
• The university
opened the Accelerator,
a 60,000-square-foot
business incubator that
is providing an enormous boost to start-up
companies in the Gulf
South region.
